British Adaptation of Tolstoy’s Masterpiece “Anna Karenina”

British film stars Keira Knightley (Atonement, Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2,3, Pride & Prejudice), Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass) and Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) will perform to make a perfect love triangle in a new adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina.

Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, The Soloist, Hanna, Pride & Prejudice) the period drama portrays a Russian aristocratic woman who sacrifices her unfeeling husband, twenty years her senior, her loveless marriage and family when she falls in love with a handsome but flaky aristocrat. When her husband refuses a divorce, Anna leaves him and her child. She scandalizes the society, becomes a social outcast and after all she commits a suicide.

The script for the adaptation comes from Oscar-winning Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare In Love). His mission is hard to fulfill attracting modern film-goers with the late-19th century drama.

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from London-based Working Title Films (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Fargo, Elizabeth, Atonement, Frost/Nixon) are producing for Universal Pictures. The movie is scheduled to start shooting later in 2011.

The Tolstoy’s classic novel has been adapted many times worldwide. The most prominent leading roles were performed by Greta Garbo in Love (1926) and in Anna Karenina (1935), by Vivien Leigh (USA) and Sophie Marceau (France), by Tatyana Samoilova and Tatyana Droobich (both from Russia).
